I wouldnt say it is easy. There are hundreds of street musicians that are looking for their break. The competition is stiff. Saying that, I think there are a lot of opportunities. There are plenty of auditions, contests, etc. where musicians get a chance to show their stuff, and of course producers are always looking for the next big thing. Then of course there is the connections thing that was mentioned above. If you know someone who knows someone, then yes, things may happen for you. Its not just being a foreign face and singing Japanese. I can think of two very different examples. One is Jero, the African-American enka singer. Before coming to Japan, he already knew how to speak Japanese. Then he came to Japan as an English teacher, joined different karaoke competitions, and finally after a few years, found an agency that was willing to take a chance with him. But they told him he needed to train for two years before they allowed him to debut. He put in his hours and now he is a success. Then there is Leah Dizon. She was discovered in the States and came over here as a model. She started her own blog (She writes in English, someone translates) which was a HUGE success. Her Japanese also slowly improved and then she was given a chance to sing 3 (heavily remixed) songs. Her voice was not the best in the world, but she was already a popular model, so it made sense for the agency to release some songs and make more money. So the bottom line is - Do you have what it takes to be a professional singer? Do you have the talent to make other people write songs for you? Why should they give you a chance over any other up and coming singer that is in Japan? If you cant answer these questions, I think it will be an uphill battle.
If you know people, it is easy to become anything. It s all about connections. J-pop and J-rock singers can be a dime a dozen over in Japan. If you ever go to a shop where they sell pictures of singers, just look at the walls and you ll see thousands of different singers. I imagine that you would have an extremely hard time if you are not fluent in the language and that you would have to enter under a different genre of music. As for the writing part of your question, yes, you can always get other people to write your songs for you, in roomaji, kanji, hiragana, katakana, whatever you like. Just make sure that they don t use a translator like google or babelfish or any of those types of sites. Those translations are always so off it is not even funny. You could also end up offending someone by accident because of those stupid sites. Someone who is fluent in English and Japanese is the best translator you could get.
No. If you re planning on going to Japan, you will need a four year degree to qualify for a work visa. And to get a work visa you need a solid job offer before you get there. If you can t speak Japanese, how can you be a J-pop singer?
It s not really easy since you have to put yourself there and people actually have to like you, because in the music industry all they care about is making money if you can prove to them that you can sell then they will sign you. You still got to learn Japanese one way or another since you got to communicate with fans and interviews. It s depend on what genre you want to get into and how you want to get started. Like if you actually want to get started well you are in Japan then you need to find a way to get there probably getting a four year degree to become a English teacher like Monkey Majik. You can joined contests and auditions and see if you can get a record deal out of that. Or if you want to get started in your own country you can try loading your songs sung in Japanese on youtude or myspace and see if other people really like it like DGDY (Rebecca and Sharon, two European girls whom sings in K-pop, Rebecca is going to Seoul,Korea payed by social networking site Gypsii amp; record label J-Tune, because they want to make her a star in Korea, Sharon declined since she was to finish college first) that is how they got discover. If you want to get into a Rock genre then playing an instrument can help a lot and being part of a band can too. If you want to get into a more Pop, Hip Hop, or Ramp;B genre then learning how to dance or rap can help. Really if you want to become a singer you need to have talent like can you write music, write songs, play an instrument, dance well, rap well, or sing well. You need to have something that people will pay to watch or listen to. I agree with everything Chandraclan.com said. You can try out for the SonyMusic International Audition if you want to: http://www.sonymusic.co.jp/sd/IA/ If you want to read more about DGDY: http://www.ampedasia.com/forums/british-...
