What type of Visa do I need for one Year stay in Japan? -

I want to travel to japan to increase my knowleged of martial arts and I want to stay at least for one year to train. Do I need a student visa or something that involes learning?

have a look at this website: http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/... it really depends on your intentions as to what visa you need. if you re only going to study martial arts, you can get a cultural activities visa. do you need to work in japan as well? if so, you ll need a working visa (there are different types depending on full-time or part-time). check with the Japanese Embassy nearest you, they ll be able to tell you exactly what you need. Make sure you start applying for the appropriate visa s at least 3months in advane because they can take a long time to be approved. Depending on your visa type, you may also need landing permission - the embassy can also help with this. once you re in japan, if you plan to leave japan for a short time and then return on the same visa, you ll need a re-entry permit which you can get after you arrive in japan (you have to get it before leaving japan otherwise they won t let you back in on the same visa).

You d be better off going to a school here. Schools there will be taught in Japanese. Not to mention living costs...

Will you need money to survive? You should probably get a job and study in your free time. Get a working visa.

I guess you can apply for student visa to stay longer. But usually they give visitors visa.

Student visa would be the best choice. Tourist visa could also do, but it limits you to certain privileges and there is a limit as to how many times you could extend the expiry date.
