Akiko is right. Both red and white have positive and negative connotations. But when red and white put together, it means joy, happiness and celebration.
In Japan, the color red is associated closely with a few deities in Shinto and Buddhist traditions, and statues of these deities are often decked in red clothing or painted red. http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/co...
Usually Japanese isn t conscious that red means good fortune but that s true quot;red + whitequot; means happy,or joyful or auspicious in Japan. Every Japanese knows this.
that wouls be more considered chinese, but it can be. it s just not AS enforced or like, well known as a lucky color. i would say that it can be, but isn t as much as in china.
Hmm.. I see that s why the annual Kohaku show is represented by the red and white. I guess your question s half-right then.
