It s not only Japanese girls but also Japanese boys who are typically thought to be quot; Furyou ( juvenile delinquents)quot; when they get their hair colored in blonde, light brown or any colors other than black. So coloring or dying hair basically means bad in Japan. But in a fashion world, it s a different story. These days, so many people in Japan get their hair colored because it s a cool thing to do. However, still having black hair has the meaning of sophistication, elegance, and good manner. Well, about coloring their hair in blonde...some people would say that people who want to have blonde hair want to be like white people. In Japan, some people admire white people that they want to have white skin, blue eyes and blonde hair. And they try to whiten their skin by using skin products, buy blue contact lenses and have their hair colord in blonde. Some people think that that s a cool thing to do. But others say that they don t have confidence of their own identity. And also when people see some people having blonde hair, they think that these people want to be spotted all the time by having blonde hair becacuse if they don t have blonde hair, nobody notices them. Anyway, depending on a person, having blonde hair could be cool or not cool. But traditionally dying hair has negative connotaions.
Society as a whole think it s tacky and offensive. Harajuku girls think it s cool.
It is also a form of rebellion and a display of the normal expected ways of behavior.
It is not only girls. This guy (movie director) is always blonde. http://www.neontetra.co.jp/tzkzone/silve... It is just a fashion. And Japanese think neither tacky nor cool nor attractive. It is common thing (I should say was more common 5 years ago.)
You need to separate slightly dyed hair and blond hair. Blond hair is a rather strong statement. You are expressing something to say with the colour of your hair. If the person is not well dressed (in mode), than he/she would be perceived to be just strange. Slight dyed has has become so typical in Japan. It seems that Japanese ladies have become sick of the colour of their black hair and now you see all generations with some degree of dyed colour in their hair. Somewhere between the two, there is a line. I would think if the colour is noticeable even in dark, it needs to be defended by some decent outfit.... just to give you an image...
