Japan was never part of an empire. It had its own imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea in the early 20th century, and then got carried away for a while in the 1940s. In China imperialism pretty much destroyed the economy and government revenue sources.

China did not buy, ship and sell African slaves. China did not enforce Opium Trade onto US. UK. China did not colonize any part of Britain major ports. Chinese did not live on top of London people like it did to Hong Kong.
