I only recently discovered Japanese movies, and have seen two (both manga) that I thought were incredibly beautiful. One was Princess Mononoke and the other was Grave of the Fireflies . I m not sure who directed them.

Seijun Suzuki is the last of the old guard still living and working. Great auteurs from the younger generations would be Takeshi Miike , Shunji Iwai and Takeshi Kitano.
