The massive migrations of Chinese happened in recent eras is mainly from the European colonisation period and Sino-Japanese Wars, rich families were able to book tickets on steam boats and escape war-time China as Japan invaded. So no, no Chinese wouldn t have migrated to Japan see as the Japanese Empire was sending armies left, right and centre into China, and the Japanese didn t just opress Chinese civilians, such incidents as Nanking Massacre and evidences of Unit 731 etc. are enough to prove Japan wasn t just occupying China. China was the final frontier for the Japanese s advancement to Middle East, and the Japanese Emperial Army killed through China in a straight line as the fastest route to further domination. Much of the Far East was under threat to the Japanese invasion, so any rich families couldn t stay safe in Asia. Some did migrate to India as it was still a part of the British Commonwealth. Others just migrated to America and Europe since European and American residents around such parts as Hong Kong and Shanghai were also departing for their countries, Chinese who could afford the boat trip went to the west. Because those countries didn t seem as glorious as America was back then. America is the land of opportunity. They wanted to make money and have a better life. At the time, India, Korea, Japan, and the Middle East was not flourishing like America was.

It will be wrong to say that Chinese did not migrate at all to these countries, though such migration is not of that big scale as migration to US. Of course US had much better opportunities for growth. And middle east is hardly a place any expat will choose for settling down.

Of course when you migrate to a foreign land you do so in search of better opportunity. India: A small Chinese migrant community exists. Korea: same as India Japan: of course you know how the two hate each other
