Is it possible for a gaijin to have a showbiz career in Japan? -

Is it possible for a gaijin to have a showbiz/music career in Japan? My friend and I have a band and we are both crazy for Japan. We are planning to study there next year and stay for a year. So we are thinking, maybe we could give it a shot in Japan... then again, I heard the Japanese are xenophobic BUT they have been very welcoming for the past decades... Also, we are both Filipinos by race but American citizens. Is our race gonna be a problem too since Filipinas are seen differently in Japan? Thanks!

If you came as tourist, no one hire you. Cos it s illegal. If you were coming with student VISA. You can work and earn income within limited hours per week. If you work in a showbiz world illegally and police found you, you would be deported immediately. And you need to speak Japanese fluently. Most artists who work in Japanese showbiz world can speak Japanese fluently. Ppl do not understand English. Japan is a nation neither like Singapore nor Hongkong. http://web-japan.org/trends/people/peo05... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marty_Fried... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Specto...

Well even though your an American citizen they look more on your physical appearance, if you look like a Filipino they ll treat you like one. Experience it the last time i went to japan even im a German citizen and not living in Philippines. Also for your showbiz question, one year is just to short if you don t know how to speak Japanese fluently. But who knows with a lot of luck you might get discovered right? There are a few band i know that are having a hard time in japan because of the competition. Aim for your goal!!!! Mabuhay

Quite honestly, it is going to be difficult if you are Filipino. Japanese favor western-looking people, (read: white Americans), for entertainment purposes, from modeling to acting/singing. The smaller forehead, nose amp; blue eyes are the quot;beautyquot; desire. Also, you need to speak Japanese. At least to introduce your band and make a little small talk. But if you are going ot study here, you wil need to learn this anyway. (just to be friendly) The JApanese are not nearly as xenophobic as you are thinking, but they do have a popular culture, like any other country, and it is based on more western nation/styles.

Hmm... This is a toughie. Unfortunately, without really good Japanese language skills, I think it will be hard to break into showbiz in Japan. Being in Japanese showbiz does not mean the same thing it does as being a star in America. It s not as easy as the pages of Nana might make it look to you. That visa issue is a definite problem, because they will definitely not hesitate to deprt you if you re caught working or doing anything else on a student visa. In Japan it seems that singers and celebrities live a life of constantly doing interviews and insipid talk shows and game shows to keep their celebrity status high and keep their place in people s hearts. Musical releases and talent are totally secondary to this. This is why it is often said that many of Japan s most beloved idols can t sing well, instead they are good at dressing fashionably, saying the right, cutesy things at interviews, and being witty and funny and charming on tv program after program. (I think that one year is not enough to build your Japanese to this level, unfortunately. To keep yourself positive in the public eye here you will need very strong, fluent Japanese.) But the key to this sort of fame is their contract! These people got contracts with major promotion companies. How can you get such a contract? You d have to go to the talents school or college and make connections and then hope to get a good deal with a non-crooked company (and the rumors are always going around about the shady and salacious dealings of managers and whatnot, especially the Johnny s guy). The contract controls the star s life, everything they do or say is dictated by the agency. You won t be able to write your own music freely or choose whatever you want to answer at interviews. It ll all be tightly controlled. The Japanese music industry is often criticized for being very hard to break into, and very pre-packaged. Are you okay with this? I think you should ask yourself. Sad to say, most non-Japanese females are considered for jobs that have more to do with the sex trade (aforementioned swimsuit model, bar hostess, adult video actress) than actual stardom. Most foreign stars from Korea, America, or other countries that are seen on Japanese tv and treated with respect were popular in their home country first and the show, movie, or album they made was brought to Japan and people fell in love with it. What makes me most annoyed is that the most quot;belovedquot; stars of Japanese TV (especially this one person called quot;Bobbyquot; comes to mind...) who are not Japanese are constantly letting themselves be set up as the butt of jokes and made to look like fools for (fake or staged) bad Japanese or clownish behavior and silly accents. Everything they say is printed out in katakana over the screen as though their words have no real meaning. Japanese people love to laugh at these characters, non-Japanese shudder and cringe at the racism it so blatantly promotes. Then again, if you look like supermodel beautiful and similar to the Japanese ideal of cute, you could have a chance to get into a girl group. Morning Musume supposedly hired some Chinese members recently. It is very sad but yes, Filipinas are viewed as prostitutes and illegal aliens here. They will look at your outside not think of you as American at all, even after they find out that you are American. It makes me furious. I m white and my husband is Mexican-American and looks fairly white, but he s more quot;Americanquot; in his way of thinking and such than I am... and yet when people find out he is of Mexican descent the weird behavior begins... suddenly I am American and the authority on all things American and he is like non-existent. If you love Japan, that s cool and all, I love it (most of it anyway) too. But if you really love music, and you really want to make your own music and your own career, I would strongly suggest doing it in America where you have more of a chance to break through, and way more personal freedom in your art. Being a Filipina diva duo would make you cooler in American eyes, where we re craving more diversity in our media and celebrities. In America we re much more open to the idea of the unique, indie musicians who have talent making it big. There are young girls who would look up to you as inspiring role models. THEN after you re big in America, believe me, Japan will want you too, and they will treat you with respect, and there you go! I wish you two the best of luck, whatever you decide to do!!! Stick together and keep working towards your dream!

Yes, it is possible for foreigners to have a showbiz career in Japan. But if you don t speak Japanese language so well, it would be difficult for you to be successful in the kind of business. You say that Japanese people are xenophobic. But actually in a showbiz, we have had Americans, Koreans and other foreigners who have become very popular in Japan. But they speak Japanese well enough to understand what Japanese comedians say and say something funny back to them. And I don t want to lie. So I m gonna just say that yes Filipinos are considered usually as prostitutes in Japan. But maybe you and your friend can change the image since you guys are Americans. I don t think your race becomes an issue but your personality will be if there will be an issue. Anyway, don t just give up. Learn Japanese language well and find a way to get into the business.

BTW, quot;gravure idolquot; would be equivalent to a swimsuit model in the U.S.

there are many foreigners in japanese show biz world.commedy ,music ,TV commentator and so on...but like others say ,most of them can speak japanese fluently while some are popular for their funny accented japanese. for example among singers(there arent so many),there is a girl who is half french-american and chinese-filipino(nationality american) ,and is now becoming popular in japan.she is also a gravure idol. hope your dreams come true.
