For a regular envelope, 84cents should be enough. Address can be in English but make sure to put JAPAN so it gets there for sure.
Take it to the post office, and they will weigh it for you. If it s just a regular letter, it should be less than a dollar to mail. Ask him / her for their address, and write it down like you would anyother. But write quot;JAPANquot; on the bottom in all caps. It will take maybe 3 to 7 days to get there.
If your letter is under one ounce, it will need .84 worth of postage before May 14. After May 14, add .2 to the amount. A First Class stamp is worth .39. Here is an example of a Japanese address: Mr. Satoru Iwata 1269-4-305 aoba chou Chuo-Ku Chiba #260-0852 JAPAN and remember to endorse the envelope with quot;Air Mailquot; or quot;Par Avion!quot; The letter will take an average of 10-16 days to get to the destination.
If you are in the USA, you have to use US postal stamps. No other stamp will get your letter out of the country. Just bring your letter to the post office and pay what they tell you. Your letter will get to is destination. If you used Japanese stamps, your letter would be returned to you.
Address should be written out like a regular letter. An 84 cents stamp should get it there within 2 weeks. If you want to get it there faster it will cost more. Below is a link to find out more pricing.
You can visit the United States Postal Service web page and do a calculation of the required postage. I did a basic envelope of 5 Oz and for the cheapest (4-6 weeks) is $4.25, the fastest (1-3 days) is $33.75
