Are There Any Good Universities in Japan for International Students? -

I am interested in studying in Japan for my Undergraduate, i don t know Japanese that well, but i really want to study there, are there any good international Universities there that are not that hard to get in to?

Look up Tokyo International Univerisity. A friend I know went there for a year with little Japanese and loved it.

Anyone got any tips for my backpacking around Japan? -

I am going to Japan in under two weeks and will be backpacking for five weeks. I have got a JR Pass and so travelling is no problem. I have a few days where I will be in Sendai City. ? Basically, the question is: has anyone got any tips for me? both places to visit but namely backpacking tips e.g. what to take to decrease the amount of luggage. Hope I am making sense.

You will like Sendai. When you are up there you should visit Yamadera, Matsushima, Hiraizumi, Aizu-Wakamatsu, and Tono. Be sure to try the beef tounge and sea-pineapple in Sendai. The Kerr book is good, but another one you should read is quot; The Roads to Sataquot; by Alan Booth.

Read Lost Japan by Alex Kerr--a great description of wonderful places to visit on the island of Shikoku. Be sure to visit Kyoto and Nara and Hiroshima and Kamakura. If you want to climb Mt. Fuji: it s open for climbing only July amp; August. It s very cold, count on it being freezing up top. Do rent a bed at one of the mountain huts and climb up to see the sunrise at the top of Fuji. It s always hazy in the summer except when a typhoon comes along and blows the haze away for a few days.

It seems like others have covered the basics, but I d just like to say that in these next two weeks try to cram as many practical Japanese phrases into your head as possible!!! I ve been all over the Pacific-Rim and believe it or not Japan has the worst level of English out of the lot, in fact to say it was lagging behind China, Taiwan, S.Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia etc... would be a huge understatement! Then again it is the traveller s responsibility to prepare for these kind of things - I just thought it would be best you knew! Even when I was in Tokyo, sales clerks would literally SHAKE when I went to buy things (I m of average height and build, slim - nothing even slightly scary... by any standards)! Despite this, you ll still have a great time Japan s a great place!

August 12-16th is our Bon holiday when trains are VERY crowded. I suggest you to avoid taking trains during that period. Or avoid any form of long distance transportation like bus or car. On the other hand, streets or trains within Tokyo or Osaka will be much less crowded at that time.

Keep your body always clean. Take showers every day. Foreign backpackers are always smell too bad. It is allowed in India or Nepal but not in Japan.

Check this blog.

err... a map. sunglasses. one of those english-to-japanese dictionary things and a smile!

Do you know how much it will cost to buy a flight ticket to Japan from Philippines? -

I m planning to go to Japan next year but I still don t know how much it will cost me for the round trip ticket..

Round trip? Well it depends on when are you going to leave and what class of flight are you going with such as economy or business class! As for the day you are leaving, It depends on when are you going to purchase the flight you booked for before the day of your departure! for example if your going to buy a ticket a day before you go that would be more expensive and most of all, there could be a chance that all of the economy class flight for that day will be fully booked by then so you don t have a choice but to go to business class flights! So purchase a ticket maybe a week before you go to japan! ^^, And for you to get an exact info. go to a travel agencies near you! Gambattene! ^____^

If you are Philippines citizen, before considering flight ticket, you d have to consider visa because Japan don t allow Philippino any visa waiver condition. If you are sure to get visa anyway, why don t you check travel agency in Manila or Cebu or Davao. They can answer you with more specific details. The fare may fluctuate by aircompany, departure/returning period and ticket quality it self(like transferable, refundable, cancel-able etc or not etc). Usually ticket is always cheaper in Philippines than Japan if the condition is same.

Several years ago Japan banned magic mushrooms. Are the mushroom spores themselves also illegal to possess? -

In many countries Psilocybin containing mushrooms are illegal, whereas the spores of such mushrooms are not restricted by law as they contain no Psilocybin. Is this also the case in Japan?

Not sure about spores... I hadn t heard they were illegal in Japan as yet... a good place to ask this question would be www.shroomery.com

Was the United States justified when using Atomic weapons on Japan? -

I am doing my history day project on this. My thesis statement is: quot; The United States of America and Harry S. Truman were justified when using the Atomic Bomb against Japanquot; I need primary sources, so I am using President Truman s diary entries. Any other suggestions? Thanks! Also please state your opinion with evidence. Thanks!

hello. the United States used the Atom Bomb, a weapon they were unsure would succeed. They knew how ferocious the Japanese were at ground fighting. (see Guadalcanall, the entire Island hopping they d already done). Operation whatever would been a very bloody event. The ugly success of the Atom Bomb was almost a blessing.

No. (t was an entirely political act to finish the war quickly before the Soviet Union could enter the war against Japan and gain Japanese territory. Deliberately killing thousands of women and children is never justified. The leaders of Japan were already discussing peace moves.

Militarily, yes. Morally, perhaps. Politically to scare Soviets, no.

How long would it take for a package to arrive in Japan from Maryland? -

I sent a package almost a week ago to my boyfriend who is stationed in Oki, Japan. I reside in Maryland. I shipped the box priority and he still hasn t received it. I did get shipment tracking on it and it says it s in Alaska (been there for 4 days now). Has anyone else shipped from the U.S. to Japan? And how long did it take for it to arrive. The box is approx. 3-4lbs. Thanks!

If you sent via priority mail then yeah about 2 weeks is a good figure, express mail is faster, but of course more expensive, not to mention its going down to Okinawa as well.

give lt at least 2 weeks

Usually packages will arrive 2-4 weeks after they are sent. I ve had them arrive later, and rarely they may arrive earlier. (I send them from PA, so the distance is similar)

Yeah, it will probably take around two weeks. The package could be stuck in customs in Alaska--if there is a station there. Otherwise not sure abou that. My packages usually tracked through one of the west coast hub cities. I don t really recall anything going through Alaska. Next time if you get Global Express it will be faster and you can get an EMS tracking number you can use on the Japanese Post Office s site. http://www.post.japanpost.jp/english/
