How many Americans were lost in battles with Japan during World War 2? -

I m going to participate in a debate on whether the atomic bombings were justified in World War 2. I d like to be able to prove that we had already lost tons of Americans to Japan in previous battles. Please include a source that isn t Wikipedia. Thanks.

Pearl Harbor (Dec 7, 1941): 2403 dead, 1178 wounded Battle of the Coral Sea (1942) - 543 dead Battle of Midway (1942) - 307 killed Battle of Guadalcanal (Aug 1942 - Feb 1943): 1768 dead (ground), 4,911 dead (naval), 420 dead (aircrew) Battle of Tarawa (Nov 1943) - 1001 dead, 2296 wounded Battle of Saipan (June-July 1944): 3426 killed; 13,160 wounded Battle of Leyte Gulf, Phillipines (Oct 1944): 3500 dead Battle of Iwo Jima (Feb-Mar 1945): 4197 killed in action; 19,189 wounded; 1,401 died of wounds; 494 missing Battle of Okinawa (Apr-June 1945): 12,513 dead or missing; 38,916 wounded Most of these are from Wikipedia, but can be confirmed from various other sources, if you look up individual battles.
