What are winters like in Japan? Is there a difference between north and south? -

We are planning our trip to Japan and like to travel around the country.

Aeras located in the North of Honshu are covered with snow, sometimes, very huge (4 metres in Niigata!). However, if you have any chance to go to Hokkaido in winter, it is an unique experience: there are not many tourists and you can take natural bath at 40 degrees while snow is falling. Fabulous! In South, it depends: you do not have snow in the cities located near the Pacific Ocean but, sometimes, there is snow in Kyoto or Nara. Seeing temples in the snow, it is great!

40 degres usual and sometimes they have snow... mostly north japan is a little colder but it depends what part and time of winter

The difference is huge between northen and southen Japan. In northen Japan, we have much snow in winter. On the other hand, we have so little snow in southen Japan and it s not so cold.

Hokkaido is far north. And it gets very cold there. They even have an ice festival. South is nt as bad.

Yes, there is a big difference... SNOW. Up north there is a lot of snow, but down south, there in not much snow. Last year, there was no snow except for in the mountains. The coldness is also very VERY chilling. It goes straight to your bones. A light winter jacket in the south is NO WHERE NEAR warm enough. You will need a thick and very warm down winter coat. And also long underwear. What you don t need down south is a snowsuit.

North, you need winter jacket and snow boots. South, all you need is light winter jacket.
