What is the ral story on ESL job placement in Japan? -

My brother in law just got done with college - is in debt - and recently got this great idea that he s going to go to Japan to teach ESL and quot;see the worldquot;. Has anyone done this- looking for what the real story is on jobs of this type.

I did something similar, except I went to Korea. It was a mixed bag. The social atmosphere was more or less like extended spring break in Tijuana. Basically, party every weekend, lots of casual relationships, blah blah blah. Not my scene. However, the work was overall fulfilling. The bosses expect a lot and aren t willing to give you much, which was really annoying. (Basically, you re required to come in to substitute as a drop of a hat, you don t find out your schedule until about three days before each term, you sometimes have to go to training on the weekends, etc... but if you ask for time off, they often won t give it to you, even if you arrange for substitutes, etc.) The money is good in Korea, too. Less so in Japan, because you have to pay for your apartment. Your best bet is to find an online forum for people who are currently teaching ESL abroad and see what kinds of problems they re asking each other about. Try www.daveseslcafe.com.
