Why do they back into parking spaces in Japan? -

Why does everyone seem to back into parking spaces in Japan? In the US most people pull in with the front of the car first. I m curious to know if there is a reason why the opposite seems to be true in Japan.

Why Japanese back in: Less likely to get into a serious accident since you don`t have anything to hit behind you (at least not people usually). Spaces are tight and Japanese are not used to watching for cars backing out of spaces and may not spot you in time if you are backing out of a space. Japanese will however, expect you to park backwards and wait for you if you are parkig your car. If a car or bus is backing out, usually they need someone to help them navagate their way out and watch for traffic or they have a loud beeper on the back to let people know they are backing up. If your car doesn`t have that, you will mostlikely be 100% liable for hitting something or someone while backing out. Many cars here have lots of back mirrors and some even have cameras on the back end and a monitor next to the driver which shows you what is going on as soon as you put your car in reverse. This is mostly to help you back into a tight space, but will not help you to see traffic coming from other sides. Why Americans park front ways first: Because many parking spaces are usually angled facing the traffic coming in so cars can pull in. Not easy to park backwards with angled parking. If you pull forward to park backwards, someone may mistake you for passing the space and snatch it. Americans are use to watching tail lights and will usually be careful and watch for cars pulling out of spaces. Also, in Japan, drivers behind you will wait for you to back in (unlike america where if you pull forward before backing in, someone will mostlikely snatch your space). Cars are not equiped with back mirrors or cameras to make parking backwards easy. It takes too long and those waiting behind you and are eager to get to another vacant parking space will get frustrated with you. Better just to pull in an be done with it. People usually need their trunk free from the front to load and unload stuff. If you back in, your trunk may be obstructed. (Even in Japan, people will park frontways if they are unloading/loading stuff from the back.)

Never really noticed that the Japanese like to quot;butt parkquot; there cars more then US people. I live in the US and I prefer to butt park my car, just cause it makes it easier to leave later.

The Japanese are all about efficiency. It is quicker and easier to leave a parking space you have backed into.

mabye it is with them driving on the other side of the road it is just easier for them to do...

it makes it easier to get into/out of small spaces

As Japanese feeling, we think like this. 1. When to park, you can see the situation around your car. We think quot;Ok fine. But I can NOT guess the situation here a few hours later? when we are back from shopping or playing with my children?. What to do if any accident or jam would occur near my car then?quot;. 2. Then we think quot;Ok then, we don t know what will happen in the future. Then I should park my car with the direction which we can get out of here soon.quot; 3. And also think quot;Ok, my car has a monitoring camera for my back. Good and easy.quot;. Usually the back side (one side) of our car is another car or wall in Japan. That is why Japanese park their car from the back.

Maybe true if is due to lack of space or efficiency like some quoted here. But I would like to add on that Japanese are generally a victim of quot;molded system syndromequot;. They are being molded as such on everything since young. One do it everybody follows and if you dont, you are being viewed as quot;strangequot;?!?! Why? Because 1) before attending my daughter elementary 1 quot;school entry celebrationquot;, my Japanese husband insist I wear a suit, a pearl necklace, a court shoe like all the rest of the local does. I reiterates cos I don like pearl and i m not Japanese so why must wear and act like them! He sulked for several days 2) Tonkatsu a crispy fried meat eat with sauce. Japanese would pour the sauce all over the crispy meat once the food arrived whereby I chose to put the sauce aside and dip the meat as I eat. My husband look at me strangely and find that hey why he never thought of that as it wont dampen the crispyness of it! Just some examples, you get what I mean! For me, as long as it is not against the law , be it the way I dress, the way I park and etc etc.

After you finished shopping or eating, you are tired and if you have to concentrate then to get out backwards of your parkingspace that would be too much hassle!

In Japan, the number one reason for anyone doing something is because, quot;Everyone else does it.quot; Plus it s just practical. Local streets are extremely narrow, and streets in residential areas are full of kids running around, people riding bicycles, the occaisonal giant delivery truck, and jerks trying to drive through it while typing out a mail on their cell phones. Also, few sidewalks, lots of garden walls, telephone poles, and building walls not 1 meter from the street.. there is no visibility, lots of blind corners. Backing out into that is just asking for an accident. Last reason, all Japanese have to go to extremely expensive driving schools that cost about $3000US and take weeks. I haven t gone, but I m sure they are all taught that backing into a parking space is the quot;only proper wayquot;

Honestly I didn t think parking from a head. Most Japanese like to do the same to the others!

have you ever noticed when many japanese remove their shoes they often leave them facing away from the interior? Same idea with cars, it;s to make it quick and easy to leave.

When I came over to the states, I didn t understand why Americans park their car that way because in Japan the way of parking is considered as quot;lazyquot; or quot; a bad driver.quot; In Japan, it s better to back into parking space because when we leave, it s easier to see the front and we can avoid to cause an accident at parking lots. But you know when we are backing our car into parking space, some of us do cause an accident. So I don t think the way we park can really prevent us from causing an accident, you know. Anyway, Japanese people and American people can t agree with stuff, sometimes. We are just opposite about a certain thing.

As others have said, it is because it is easier to see where you are going when you are pulling out of your parking space. That AND the parking spaces here in either metropolitan or rural Japan are often hard to get into, cramped and for smaller cars because there is less real estate, here. Also, Japanese are taught in driving school to back that way, often unbelting themselves so they can turn easier and see better to back into a parking space. (Not that anyone does that when they get their license.) You are more vulnerable because of this, and backing into a space is thus less of a risk (arguable of course) than pulling out into a lane of traffic. Also, pulling out of a space is less of an imposition on others (a very important cultural aspect for the Japanese). You pull out of your space when the lane is clear. Backing out into traffic where other vehicles are (as opposed to backing into your empty space) is an imposition.
