What is a good gift for my host family in Japan? -

I am going to travel to japan this summer for 2 weeks and staying with a host family. I want to bring them a gift from the States. What is a good gift that is rare in japan?

I lived with 4 host families over two years in japan, and by the end of it, i found the best thing to do was to give them a small assortment of things because a lot of the time they will make a little display, or they will pass them on to their friends to show you off. Some things I found to be staples were DEFINITELY whiskey for your host dad. They drink that shizznazz like water. Other than that, touristy things go over really well. I m canadian, so i brought the ultimate canadiana, smoked salmon, maple syrup, and little canadian flags worked really well...find some sort of equivalent from your state or area....Also, I was able to find a little book (like 40ish pages) of basically pictures of canada and little blurbs about each shot, but it was in japanese...so that was a sweet find. If you live in a major city, you ll probably be able to find some of those too which go over well because it s a really really good way to bridge the language barrier....everyone understands a picture (and so s whiskey too ;) Oh also, like other people have mentioned, the wrapping is really important...Don t wrap it before you travel and give it to them all squished in the bag...buy some red and gold paper and wrap it up nicely when you get there....you can get everything you need for intense wrapping at family mart or 7-11 (they know their gifting!) have a a good one! enjoy your trip! it s a sweet place!

Food and consumables are always a good choice, particularly chocolates, good whiskey (for your host father), cookies or jam homemade by your mother, or the specialty food of your town. Wrap your present well and decorate the package with some small token from your town or state - a magnet, pins, pen or dishtowel. Something touristy will be fine.

Try to drop in your nearest shopping mall and pick some mixed combination of sweet packages like Bodega or famous See s in LA or Giradelli in SF or Hoffman s in FL. Well wrapping on is absolutely necessary for modest appreciation. You d better give em at least half dozen packages of the assortment if they could pass some their friends too. Books of English, photoframes, T-shirts, Pin badges, Spoons or something hard goods are not good enough because they are only interested in foods from USA.

Well do NOT get them something that is english and has english words (like an english book or video game). I would give them something from you re state or about the entire USA. I would get them the USA s flag.

a photo frame a figurine that symbolize US or something that theyll remember you if they see or USA printed products/materials...
