I love Japan...the war was unfortunate but it happened and its over. They are a great people that have rebuilt and peacefully become a world leader...they really should be seen as an example. Plus the girls are really hot.
When compared to a modern day nuke, the ones dropped on Japan were just babies. It would be like saying quot;How Manhattan survive after 9/11?quot; Life goes on.
The only down side to the great nation of Japan is their constant refusal to acknowledge the wrong they did to the people of the countries they invaded, China, Korea, Phillipines, Malaysia, Burma, and various Islands in the Pacific. They also refuse to acknowledge the thousands of women who were forced to act as quot;comfort girlsquot; to provide sexual services for the Japanese occupation forces, or the hundreds of thousands of civilians starved and worked to death in camps. As well as the many hundreds of POW that were worked to death in inhumane conditions for a bowl of rice per day. Pick up amy Japanese school kids history books and you will find this is hardly mentioned!!!
Say what you will about the USA but when W.W.2 ended our government didn t pack up and go home leaving the people in both Germany and Japan on their own. We stuck around and helped then rebuild, at times at the expense of our own industries. A German citizen once told me that he could not understand why our government gave them new modern steel making equipment while the steel makers in America were still having to use out dated machinery,allowing them to move ahead of us and eventually brought about the end of steel making in the USA
That was 65 years ago. They rebuilt after the bombs, and are now (as you said) a technology leader. They are also now an ally of the United States.
After the war the US completely rebuilt Japan s industry with state of the art equipment at US taxpayer expense. Europe was in shambles after the war so they were behind Japan immediatly. The US had converted most of her factories into building weapons and such, so she had to completely convert them back (at expense of the businesses, not the gov t). This left the US behind Japan also. Japan also subsidizes all businesses for exporting goods. The US supposedly believes in free trade but has typically just refused to properly tarriff Japanese goods. This allows the Japanese to undercut US prices for the same goods since the kickback they get from the gov t makes the cost of production significantly cheaper. At one point you could actually buy cars cheaper in the US than you could straight from the factory in Japan. Also the lack of Jap anti-trust laws allows all their businesses to jointly research things, specifically new required technologies (ie. emmissions systems in cars) while US companies each have to work alone spending significantly more money. Basically, the US as the largest consumer market in the world, prohibitted her own business and supported Japanese business enough that even with minimal work put in, they would be the greater economic power eventually. Then due to things like labor unions and illogical management styles, the Japanese were setup better for mass production. This is changing-as the Japanese businesses move to a more American style they are losing money and having some problems. Even the auto industry which is soaring for them is not doing as well as it should be. Edit: Forgot to mention that due to restictions placed on them, the Japanese were not allowed to have a military after WWII. This saves tons of money for the gov t allowing them to put it into tech research and promoting business.
Japan did survive after the atom bombs drop in two key cities Nagasaki and Hiroshima. How? They were help financial of course by the US through the rehabilitation programs set up to some how help the victims of the bombs they(the US themselves) didnot even know what kind of devastation this bomb could do to the citizenry of Japan during that time. Even the pilots who drop the bomb figure out that the effect of the bomb would just be similar they encountered during the German bombing in the end of the European campaign to get rid of Hitler. With the help of the US finance department and other agency the began the slow pace of rebuilding Japan, but with certain clauses of the terms that Japan would not anymore rebuild its army and have the inclination of conquering the whole Asia, and with this condition, the US ties up with the brightest mind in Japan to bring them to the US with the hope of learning also from Japan mutual pact of exchanging technology.
Because the people were energetic and driven. What I find strange is that they could conquer so many people and lands. With American help they have become the second biggest economy in the world. It boggles my mind how this small island of Japan is second only to the United States in financial business. America needs to send men there to breed with them so as to eradicate this threat.
The bombs were denoted in air burst manner. Not only does this maximize power. I minimizes long lasting nuclear fallout. The radioactivity went back down to background in several years. If such bombs were denoted underground or at ground level, then Nagasaki and Herosima would been uninhabitable for hundreds to thousands of years.

because under our military protection, it gave them time to concentrate on rebuilding their economy.
Well even though Japan attacked the US first , the US was nice enough to help rebuild their economy with military police and $$$ support. Even the current Japanese constitution was created using the USA s as a blueprint, all be it a little more liberal.
Conventional bombing, especially incindiary bombing, caused much more death and total distruction than the 2 atomic bombs. The Americans, after their experience invading other Japanese home territory islands, realized that the atomic bombs paled in comparison to the conventional destruction that would be necessary to conquer the main islands of Japan. Iwo Jima and Okinawa proved that the Japanese would fight to the bitter, bitter end. It didn t matter to them if it was utterly hopeless, they still would not surrender. Had the invasion of Japan proceeded, it would be horror beyond what the world had ever seen before, with mass civilian suicides, etc. So the quot;shock and awequot; psychological effect was needed. The other side of the argument was that it was just unneccessary horror and a crime against humanity, since they were going to surrender anyway when they got news that the Soviets were going to invade. How Japan recovered? They didn t 100% recover. There is still a deep scar in the national psyche over the cruel and unusual horror of atomic war. The Amercans did a really excellent job providing Japan with a model for recovery but in the end all the credit belongs with the Japanese people. They went through such loss and suffering and still pulled themselves together and rebuilt a better Japan for their children.
They survived surprisingly but not surprisingly, they rebuilt and got on with things. Funny, someone said they re an ally of the United States. They had 2 choices, that or get nuked off the face of the Earth.
