What kind of food is recommended for a student in Japan to buy? -

I m usually sticking to safe food right now: sandwiches, cereal, noodles. But what else should I go for that is cheap, healthy, and good while I m here in Japan?

I would first say that an automatic rice cooker is a pretty essential tool, because rice is the staple of the Japanese diet. Once you make sure you have rice with most of your meals you can build cheap, healthy and good meals around it. A big trick that many international students miss out on is knowing how to use the kind of ingredients that Japanese food is made with. If you know how to use the vegetables and other things well you can make all sorts of nice dishes. The other thing I would recommend is to make sure you get the leaflet from your local supermarket that shows when different items are on sale. Most Japanese supermarkets have items that are on sale by different days--for example, the supermarket in my area has eggs at half price on one weekday, rice at a big discount on another day, and so on. They also mark down prices on perishables that are near the expiration date, so you can save alot of money by shopping at night, when the store is trying to clear out things from the day. Good luck!

That s bit of an extreme combination to be eating in Japan... lol The foods are pretty cheap in Japan in general. Although, if you are looking at around 500yen or less to fill you up, then that s a different story. As it s been mentioned, go for the gyudon shops like Yoshinoya, Matsuya, etc. Gyudon is basically a sukiyaki style beef on rice. Another option is Japanese curry. If you get a vegetalian one without meat, I guess you can fit it under 500yen easily. And also, there are many local restaurants that does lunch specials too so keep your eyes out for it. Japan is the country with biggest food culture. If you are there, may as well try everything from junk food to traditional Japanese, Chinese, classic western, and the modern Japanese where everything is combined and cooked in totally new style.

The Yoshinoya gyudon chain is tasty and cheap. I have to pay more for a bowl of gyudon in Vancouver than I do in Tokyo, and the Van. gyudon is not as good.
