Was it the right thing to do when we droped the atomic bombs on Japan? -

I would like to know your opinion on the subject. Why or Why not? Was it the right thing to do to drop the atomic bombs on Japan to end WWII?

Was there any alternative course of action that would have resulted in fewer Japanese people dying? There were no good options for President Truman to choose from. So he simply choose the least bad.

At the time, it seemed the most feasible. Those in power decided to look and the numbers, and they determined that a war drawn out longer would cost more soldier s lives than civilian. That s what they said; that was their justification amp; argument... That being said, Japan s rulers of that time did not surrender from the first bomb (August 6th, 1945), but compelled USA to drop the 2nd one (August 9th) in order to secure a surrender. Why did Japan refuse to give up after the first bomb? Wasn t that single first bomb enough? So, at least for the 2nd bomb, Japan s own rulers were to blame.... War destroys lives - soldiers amp; civilians. War destroys families - lost fathers, brothers, amp; sons War destroys economies - debts, reconstruction, taxes War destroys environment - poisons, toxins, waste War changes history - winner always prevails in history books War solves nothing - bullies continue to promote amp; justify war Right thing to drop the atomic bomb on Japan? Why was the USA s hand forced to react so strongly? Why did Japan feel a need to invade and fight China amp; USA? Why did Japan make a pact with Italy amp; Germany for World Power? Their own leaders sought out war; let the charges be brought up against them - first. 041508 6:15

for some who do not understand history or are blinded by their ignorance the use of the Atomic bomb on japan in the summer of 1945 actually saved far more lives then it took , The idea of putting ground troops in Japan would of resualted in many many more killed on both sides , Little is known of the fact that the US had one Nuke left and it was targeted for downtown Tokyo had japan not surrendered when they did .

We would have lost so many more men trying to take Japan, the Japanese people and their government were preparing to fight to the last person. What I have never understood is why after the first bomb dropped and Hirohito saw this terrible new weapon, he did not surrender. There are so many great books written about WW2 and the history of Japan s militarization, they are worth reading.

I agree with the quot;least bad choicequot; reference from another poster. If we did not drop the bombs, the Japanese would not have surrendered. We would have had to invade Japan on a massive scale and our causalities would have been huge- I believe estimates put it at around 1 million people.

Not was it right but was it necessary? The Japanese willingness to fight to the finish as demonstrated at Iwo Jima and Okinawa proved this, An invasion of Japan precede by conventional blockbuster and Napalm bombing of all Japanese cities would cost far more Japanese lives.

Every day, someone asks this question: YES it was the BEST thing for the US, even the Japanese It saved untold lives. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

Y E S, It was absolutely necessary for President Truman to order the dropping of the 2 Atomic Bombs. It actually saved millions of lives, American as well as Japanese!!

Yes, many American, English, Australian, and Japanese lives were saved by the use the atomic bombs.

It saved a lot of AMERICAN lives and ended a war. Yep, I m going to have to say that Harry Truman did the right thing. I praised a Democrat...one from more than 50 years ago, but still, a Democrat.

yes. that is what we should have done after 9/11. it just shows how chickensh*t the us has become. we are too afraid of hurting someones feelings or looking like the bad guy. no wonder the country is going to sh*t.

yes lauren, without a doubt, countless american soldiers lives were saved as a result of that decission.

Let s give this dead horse a rest, there s nothing left to beat on anymore!

No, it was very wrong, Japan was willing to surrender but the bomb needed testing on live subjects so it was payback time. America was the first and only to use the bomb to date, I hope it stays that way, but Iran seems to be next on the list.

Whats the point in the question really. We (globally) elect goverments to make these decisions, so whatever the general masses think, is irrelevant. It is a question for the powers that be, as to wether it was right or not !!

It s never right to drop atomic bombs. What on earth does that solve? It just makes us worse people... every bomb dropped or war started just makes the world an even more unhappy place to live.
